about

Note: Only available in digital download. First pressing (CD) out of print.

This recording attempts to prove a modest point - that the "duo" is a floating signifier, a word without a fixed meaning. Traditionally, the word is used to describe a piece with two performers. This is certainly the case on a number of tracks contained here, but there is more to it. Perhaps because of my predilection to improvisation, I conceptualize the "duo" as a process rather than an object. Each piece is a search, a navigation through the dialogic space of negotiation, interaction and meaning. This recording also illustrates recent interests in my musical explorations. Through the use of sampling, electronics, and (re)composition, new identities emerge that go beyond standard notions of the performer. One of the main challenges faced by the performers was the real-time negotiation of these emergent identities.

Needless to say, multiple notions of the "duo" are at the bottom of this recording. "Tandem" does more that suggest this in a strange and roundabout manner - it's meant to imply togetherness and collaboration. Most of the music presented here is improvised, and the few "composed" pieces (Birdrock Dub, Sblat and C.T.) rely heavily upon improvisation. I am indebted to the performers - who contributed their unique musical personalities to this project.
